Overview
When we first got to Idaho, one of Ross's first bucket list items was that we MUST collect Star Garnets. A friend told us to check out the Emerald Creek Garnet Area. We first attempted go to the Garnet Mine in late May. That is when we found out you definitely HAVE to plan for this trip due to needing reservations and limited numbers per day.
Description from Recreation.gov

The Digging for Star Garnets Experience
Ross Rating: 10/10
Crystal Rating: 10/10
From Ross (the Rockhound):
From Crystal (the Meat Girl): Similar to our trip to Gem Mountain Sapphire Mine, this is a GREAT place to dig into rockhounding. The Garnet Area is managed and operated by the U.S. Forest Service. They have it set up as a clean, easy, process while managing the crowds to make it even more enjoyable. They provide all the tools you need, plus are very friendly and informative during your Garnet Mining. The best part as a non-rockhound is that there is great payoff! You will definitely find Garnets each visit to the sluice all all shapes and sizes. Honestly had fun! 10 out of 10, would do again and recommend!
