Overview

Bayou Segnette was our first big trip as a couple and Wanda's inaugural haul! We decided to pop down to the New Orleans area for a spring trip in March 2021.

LA State Parks Description:

" Bayou Segnette State Park offers the best of everything. Just a thirty-minute drive across the Mississippi River from New Orleans, a multitude of recreational opportunities awaits visitors of all ages -- boating, fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking, picnicking, playgrounds and, of course, swimming in the wave pool, as well as an ecosystem that offers you the chance to spot plants, trees and wildlife from both swamps and marshland."

Location

7777 Westbank Expressway, Westwego, LA70094

Cost

We booked March 13-15, 2021 (non-peak season) to stay at Bayou Segnette State Park in Wanda, our 27ft travel trailer. We rented a premium, back-in campsite for a total of $69.34. We booked our stay three days in advance and here is a full breakdown of our cost to stay at the campgrounds:

  • $58.00 Camping Fee

  • $6.00 Reservation Fee

  • $5.34 Tax.

Our campsite had a small deck on our awning side, with a picnic table and a firepit on the other side. We were able to bring our two dogs, Rhyder and Quorra with no issues what so ever. They ask that you keep them on a leash and clean up after them, the typical reasonable requests.

Planning

  • Traveling on the off-season, we were able to book the week of our trip.

  • Bring fishing poles and stuff to cook fish for a great fish fry

  • If you don't have a camper and don't want to tent camp we discovered they have some GREAT on the water cabins!

Experience Bayou Segnette:

Ross's Overall Rating: 8/10

Crystal's Rating Overall: 8/10

We really enjoyed the campgrounds at Bayou Segnette! The campground is clean, quiet and very enjoyable. We intended our trip to just be a fun weekend trying out the camper and fishing, so this campground was perfect for us.

From Ross (the Rockhound):

From Crystal (the Meat Girl): Bayou Segnette was just a fun getaway for the weekend. Nothing super incredibly special, just a great state park with great surroundings and activities.

Fishing at Bayou Segnette Campgrounds

Ross's Rating: 10/10 and Crystal's Rating: 10/10

  • Salt and freshwater fishing

    • Common fishing includes: bass, catfish, bream, perch, redfish and trout

We didn't have much hope on the fishing front, going on a windy, overcast day. Ross decided to pick a spot off the beaten path, little did we know, 15 minutes into our fishing trip Crystal would catch all the fish we could handle.

Ross's Rating: 10/10 and Crystal's Rating: 10/10

  • Go early!

  • If you want Louisiana Shrimp make sure you are asking the vendors about what you are buying.

For the weekend we bought: AMAZING U10 (under 10/lb) aka MASSIVE shrimp, hog head cheese, cracklings, alligator sausage and tamales.
